DisposeRx Announces Strategic Initiative with Walmart

Local company partners with national retailer to help curb America’s opioid epidemic

Washington, DC – DisposeRx Inc – (DisposeRx.com) announced today a strategic initiative with Walmart (http://walmart.com) to distribute drug disposal packets at its pharmacies to aid in the safe and permanent elimination of unwanted, unused or expired medications. DisposeRx believes that improper drug disposal is a major contributor toward the opioid epidemic and they are fully committed to stopping this epidemic where it often starts: in the medicine cabinet.

DisposeRx is a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water, dissolves drugs and sequesters them in a rigid gel which may be safely discarded in the trash. In order to activate DisposeRx, you simply combine the packet contents with tap water inside the prescription vial and shake. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8hZvkRjKgk ). The ingredients of each DisposeRx packet are non-toxic and form a solidifying gel of cross-linking polymers that permanently sequesters pills, tablets, capsules and patches.

Dr. John Holaday, Chairman and CEO of DisposeRx, commented, “The establishment of DisposeRx’s Walmart relationship emphasizes our combined commitment to curbing the cycle of drug overdose, addiction and death that often begins in the medicine cabinet. DisposeRx is aggressively pursuing our opportunities to educate patients about the enormous need to curb drug overdoses that begin in the home, hospital and hospices, and to provide an easy-to-use and fail-safe product for drug disposal. Among the various approaches to drug disposal, including drug take back programs, flushing, mixing with charcoal or kitty litter, we believe that DisposeRx is the most effective, permanent, convenient and affordable solution.“

Seventy percent of opioid addictions, overdoses and deaths begin with opioid painkillers that remain unused in patients’ medicine cabinets. These opioids may be diverted to abuse by friends and family, and the cycle of addiction that requires increasing amounts of drugs to manage tolerance and prevent withdrawal begins. As addictions progress, the prescription costs become more expensive and the opioids are more difficult to obtain, which may lead to the use of heroin, a more available and affordable alternative. The recent addition of fentanyl to heroin on the street has resulted in a lethal combination that significantly contributed to over 64,000 drug overdose deaths in 2016, with further increases projected when data are analyzed for 2017. Economic costs related to the management of the opioid epidemic in the US now exceed $300 billion annually.

Currently, government agencies like the Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency and the Drug Enforcement Agency lack regulatory control over drug disposal. The absence of proper drug disposal contributes to misuse, addiction, overdose and environmental pollution. DisposeRx’s commitment to stopping the opioid epidemic will likely gain new traction from policy makers nationwide as legislators return to their home states and continue the discussions being held in Washington.
