On the topic of at-home drug disposal, Congressman Richard Hudson has this to say in a recent interview “70% of heroin addicts started with an opioid, out of a medicine cabinet. . .I think the key [in tackling the opioid crisis] is it’s got to be something that’s easy for the consumer to do from their home. But I think ideas like that is where we need to go.

Congressman Richard Hudson, representing North Carolina’s 8th congressional district, has heard heartbreaking story after heartbreaking story from his constituents who’ve lost loved ones to opioid addiction. It has become personal because so many of his constituents have been affected by the opioid epidemic. He is in a position to do something about the opioid crisis because he is on the Committee Jurisdiction, and he is determined to do it. His bill H.R. 5687 passed the House on June 19, 2018.

H.R.5687 – 115th Congress (2017-2018)- Securing Opioids and Unused Narcotics with Deliberate Disposal and Packaging Act of 2018 or the SOUND Disposal and Packaging Act. This bill amends the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to authorize the Food and Drug Administration to require certain packaging and disposal technologies, controls, or measures to mitigate the risk of abuse or misuse of a drug or a class of drugs. Their discussion highlighted the importance of educating patients on the proper use, storage and disposal of opioids and offering convenient at-home drug disposal methods.

In Hudson’s interview for the new podcast series Opioids: Hidden Dangers, New Hope he talks about the truly bipartsan efforts taking place on Capitol Hill to address the opioid crisis. He also talks about at-home drug disposal as a great solution to easily getting rid of unused or expired prescription medicine from your medicine cabinet.
